Cultural Mapping

Sandbox is working on an initiative with Lancashire County Council and Preston City Council to develop a new cultural mapping solution for communities, businesses and cultural organizations. The project aims to develop new ways of engaging these groups in an understanding of social networks and their relation to the urban environment. Sandbox has already developed a mobile cultural probe solution that tracks volunteers from a wide variety of backgrounds and sectors. The cultural probe makes use of GPS technology and utilises the multimedia-capturing capabilities of mobile phones to allow users to upload video, data, sound and images. This uploaded data will then be embedded and displayed in a variety of 2D and 3D formats.

The cultural mapping project will look at the relationships between individuals and communities and how they locate, operate and flow through selected environments and public spaces. It will aim to utilise a number of creative methods and technologies to extend this discussion and provide a measure of its intrinsic benefits, lodged within a framework suitable for widespread use. It is hoped this framework will be beneficial toward informing planning, public engagement, architecture and development of our urban landscape, leading to a new integrative and multidimensional planning system.
